Features of Asheron's Call
|
|
The sun sets in a fine shroud of mist, reddening the stucco of a cheery hilltop inn as wind sighs through the groves; in the mountains, a giant banderling shadows a warrior party amid a lulling patter of snow; and somewhere below the flagstones of the deepest Empyrean excavation, the clicking, chittering Olthoi share mad and bloody dreams. Fond human fantasies meet strange nightmares in the magical realm of Dereth. Escape into 500 square miles of hills, mountains, deserts, forests, towns, and dungeons, where no invisible boundaries interrupt your journey over the vast open spaces. With or without the stunning effects of 3D hardware acceleration, your computer becomes the window on a living world. Storms sweep the countryside, the sun sinks into the west, the moons rise and fall, and dawn creeps over the horizon.
Asheron's Call develops a heroic fantasy setting familiar enough to draw you in yet mysterious enough to draw you onward. A varied host of monsters populate the benighted, medieval terrain; mysterious artifacts of great power embellish vast treasure hoards; and sorcerers, fighters, and rogues plot both heroic alliances and base villainy. However, Asheron's Call retains a strong flavor all its own, with an original backstory and creatures, and unparalleled flexibility in character creation and development. After selecting your attire and facial features from millions of possible combinations, customize your skill set to make your character truly unique. As you defeat foes, you can allocate experience to not only specific skills but also the base attributes like strength and intelligence. And the allegiance system grants you power and prestige as you recruit followers to your service. Enter the vast and magical world of Dereth, where a new and heroic identity awaits you!

What the Critics Say About the Game
|
"The game is an absolute blast. The environments range from nice to stunning, the gameplay is addictive, the multi-part quests are interesting. . . . Add to that the underlying technical stability of the game . . . plus the general lack of prime-time server lag and scarcity of disconnects, and you have a title which has more than earned its place among the big names of online RPG entertainment." - Computer Games Online
"Asheron's Call is one that should be answered by all who enjoy role-playing games. It brings to life all that is good in RPGs and improves on other things that were not so good. With it, we encounter the best of the genre in quests, combat, and a revamped magic system. Added to that are a plethora of never-before-seen monsters and an in-depth character creation system." - The Adrenaline Vault

Rare Items Update
|
|
Some of the most difficult to obtain and most desirable items in Asheron's Call have long been the Rares introduced with the Throne of Destiny expansion. Across the years a few lucky adventurers have located ancient items with a variety of levels of power. In the April 2010 update Rares are becoming less rare and more balanced with the highest tier of loot. The major changes to Rares are occurring with Weapons, Armor and Jewelry.
Rare weapons have been completely re-balanced. Every weapon type now has five rares that each fulfills a different combat role. Every rare weapon now has a Resistance Rending effect to match their damage type as well as one of five different flavors. The five types of rare weapons are 1. Higher Critical Rare 2. Higher Critical Multiplier 3. Slight Armor Rending 4. Creature Slayer Type 5. Shield Hollow with additional Human Slayer. All of the weapons now have Epic Bloodthirst and Blood Drinker VIII and have slightly better base damage than a fully tinkered weapon of the same type.
Armor Rares have been adjusted to 500+ base armor level and cover a much greater variety of spells all of which are Epics and Level 8s. Each location covered by a piece of rare armor has different spells assigned to it. This means that one set of Rare Pauldrons will have the same spell selection as another set of Rare Pauldrons which is different from the spell selection of any other location of Rare Armor.
Rare Jewelry has also been updated. This update was less extreme but all Jewelry now has some form of Epic as well as including only Epic and Level 8 spells.
Rare Weapons, Armor and Jewelry also will no longer always drop on death. These items are all now the same value, 50,000 pyreal.
Much like Aetheria you will now find that Rare Weapons and Rare Armor will now increase in level as you hunt. Unlike Aetheria Rares use a flat leveling scheme meaning that each level will cost exactly the same as amount as the first level. Leveling a Rare item will activate spells some of which are unique to rare weapons or armor and others that belong to the current armor spell sets. Be the first to increase your rare weapon to the highest level and reap the benefits.

Barbers and Hairstyles
|

Barbers have set up shop to prepare people for the wedding. These artisans can help you freshen up your look, using their expert techniques to restyle your hair and freshen your look. Their craft is not entirely mundane for they can even change your appearance as they freshen up your look. Located near the tailors, you simply talk to the barbers. If you can pay their price you will find a variety of options appear to allow you to change your style. The barbers are very particular about their time, however. You pay up front, and their fee stands regardless of what look you choose, even if change your mind and get cold feet.

Multi-slot Armor
|

Many blacksmiths have worked their craft in the lands of Dereth and ancient armor can be found all over. It is not uncommon for smiths to create large pieces of armor that offer coverage over multiple areas of the body. To the discerning adventurer trying to create the perfect suit of armor, however, these larger pieces can be inconvenient to fit into their suit even though the piece may have powerful magics and look very good when worn. In their work to deliver on the noble's request of armor appearance customization they discovered a way reduce the coverage of bulky armors. This allows adventurers to more easily fit pieces into existing suits.
This craft magic is difficult and the tools that use them are time intensive to create. As such, the magic is expensive and can only be used by adventurers once every month. Tailors sell tokens that allow adventures to obtain these tools, but the Apprentice Tailors tasked with the creation of these tools and their distribution will only hand them out once a month.
Once you have traded in this token to obtain one of these Armor Reduction Tools you can use it on looted pieces of armor to reduce its coverage to a single slot. This will not work on armor crafted for a specific purpose as a reward for some dangerous quest. Simply use the Armor Reduction Tool on an armor piece that covers multiple slots and that coverage will be made more efficient. The slot the item now covers depends on the piece of armor you have changed.
Your newly reduced piece of armor still looks as good as it always has. Although the coverage has been reduced, the attractive extras still remain on the armor. As a result, your reduced piece might still have a visual appearance on additional areas. Your coat which now provides protection to only your chest might still have costuming on arms. When you equip other sleeves you may wish to retain the look of the coat, while another person might prefer the new sleeves in their quest for the perfect look.
To aid adventures with this dilemma, tailors have perfected new crafting tools. The Armor Layering Tool (top) will ensure that your armor piece that has been reduced to a single slot piece is always on the top layer and shows over other pieces. The Armor Layering Tool (bottom) removes that quality so other armor can show over the piece if it is layering on top.

Tailoring
|

To celebrate the upcoming wedding, the nobles of Dereth have sponsored artisans to help the citizens look their best. Tailors have appeared in many of the major cities, including Holtburg, Sanamar, Yaraq and Shoushi. These tailors create tailoring kits to enable citizens to customize the look of their armor if the character has an initial armor piece to work from. Each tailor sells tailoring kits. These kits enable your character to take the appearance off an item that looks good and add that appearance to another item equipped in the same place(s) with more favorable adventuring qualities. The initial piece is always the piece that looks good. Using the tailoring kit upon that piece destroys it, but the look of the item is retained within the kit. The tailoring kit is then applied to your tried and true adventuring armor piece to change its appearance.
If you use the kit properly, the end result is that your trusty armor that once had an old, tired looking appearance will now have the new attractive look of the piece you liked! You can put together a unique style and leverage the varied colors and styles of Dereth without fear of having your skull crushed because a piece you like does not have the armor protection you might require as you adventure throughout the lands.
